Pipe Bursts In Derby City Centre Sending Water 10 Metres Into The Air

Burst Pipe in Derby City Centre

10-Metre High Water Plume

A burst pipe in Derby city centre caused a dramatic spectacle on Wednesday morning, sending a plume of water 10 metres into the air.

The incident occurred on Friar Gate, a busy shopping street, at around 10:30 am. Witnesses described the scene as "chaos", with water gushing out of the ground with "tremendous force".

Road Closures and Disruptions

The burst pipe led to the closure of Friar Gate, as well as surrounding roads. Traffic was diverted away from the area, causing significant delays during rush hour.

Severn Trent Water, the company responsible for the water supply in Derby, quickly dispatched a team of engineers to the scene. They worked throughout the day to repair the damaged pipe.

Cause of the Burst Pipe

The cause of the burst pipe is still under investigation. However, it is believed that the cold weather may have played a role.

Freezing temperatures can cause the ground to expand and contract, putting pressure on underground pipes. This can lead to cracks and leaks, eventually causing a burst pipe.

Advice for Residents

Severn Trent Water has advised residents in the affected area to check their taps and toilets for any signs of discolouration or low water pressure.

If residents experience any problems, they should contact Severn Trent Water on 0800 783 4444.
